I feel like this piece is lacking some color. I know the edges and everything aren't cleaned yet, I am still working on it. But any suggestions or ideas to make this piece better would be great.

These poses are currently for the "good" side of my character. She is suppose to have an innocent beauty. I want to show as she becomes more and more known as the most beautiful woman in Europe, she gets more and more selfish, and tries to eliminate our competition. I was kind of thinking of Lady Gaga when I was working on this character. haha... Any suggestions to make the poses better or ideas for other poses would be great.

This is my float so far. I wanted to show a very peaceful garden in the front, and very evil looking in the back. This float is suppose to be very massive, and I am still currenly trying to figure out how to make it move, and what kind of stuff I want to have inside. Any ideas would be extremely helpful!

This is my current design for the float master. The setting takes place in Venice, Italy around 1930s. She is in her mid-30s and is the most beautiful woman in all of Europe. All the girls idolize her and wants to be just like her, but secretly she doesn't! She doesn't want anyone more beautiful than her! Men who go crazy for her is her reason to live, without attention she is nothing. She goes around city to city for the attention and when she sees a girl who is ever so slightly pretty, she will kill her.

I am still playing around with the shape and concept, and nothing is really finalized. So any comments are welcome!

i'm have problems picking her age. for the "nice" version i'm trying to make it have a feeling of a favorite auntie or grandma... i can't decide. So the "evil" one is suppose to be a bitter women. i'm still working out my story. its suppose to be a dimsum float, set in san francisco. she lures little children, kidnaps them, and cooks them for the stuffing of pork buns(cha siu bao). anyway, if you guys like any that would help me go into a direction. thanks

Hey all, here is a VERY rough sketch of the direction I am headed with the ship. Since it isn't Ahab's ship, I wanted it to be less of a reflection of my character, and more of an influence on her. I want it to inspire insanity. I am going with more of a pointy sail look. I have my rough sketch with triangle sails, and also a more cleaned up version with a more realistic take on the sails. I am still leaning toward triangles, but would like some opinions. This isn't going to be the final drawing, just an exploration of the design. Thanks!

Here is my son of Ahab so far. I'm currently working on paint and color, but I wanted to see if there was anything that y'all saw that needed changing. I want him to seem a bit volcanic but coming from a background of pain and wandering. He's lived on Easter Island for years and found his fathers old ship washed up on a deserted side of the island. At this point he's charged up and going after Moby. The spearpoint is made out of Obsidian- a volcanic rock. Crits on design choices or anatomy or anything would be great. OHHH, and He's stepping up onto a gang plank to board his ship although its not drawn in here. Thanks!!!

This is a rough first pass of my "sighting" sequence. The setup is that the daughter of Ahab has disguised herself as a man in order to get on this whaling ship.

These aren't to time yet so it's kind of like watching it in slow motion. If you can bear with it, please let me know if it's confusing or unclear or at all comprehensible. All comments, suggestions, observations are appreciated.

My project is short film telling the story of a brazilian boy who meets a mysterious man. The man gives him a "berimbau" - a musical instrument that has a magical sound. Through the sound of the berimbau the boy will discovery many wonderful things...

This is not a gag or funny movie, it is more like a folk tale. It is set in Brazil. It will be done in 3D computer animation and it will be between 7 and 10 minutes long. There are two main characters, a couple of sets, props and a few chickens too! The idea is to make a piece strong enough to enter the animation festival circuit. I would like to work on visual development during the summer with a group of interested students.

Here is my most recent line drawing of the "fleeing" moment. I'm working on the painting but I'm unsure about which one of the owls is better. I want it to seem like the owl is flying away from the spot where Joringel is sitting. One is more of a profile and more 'owl-y', but it seems like it might be flying from screen right somewhere. The other one is more dynamic and feels good because it is flying straight away from the dramatic dude. What do you think? Thanks

Facial Features

Katie did a great job of illustrating the principles of the rhythm chart, so I don't think I need to go into that as much. This is a quick paintover to address some of the other issues concerning your portraiture. One thing about overly symmetrical facial features is that the face tends to lose some of its charm. While you should do your best to obey the rhythm chart, you also have to consider the subtle sideways smile, the half-smile, one eye closed more than another, one eyebrow slightly raised more than the other--these things give your character, well, more character. You should maintain your proportions, but don't be a slave to it. Flip it horizontally and make sure it works both ways, but keep in mind the feel. Does it still feel like your character? If not, ask yourself, who is she and why does this person not feel like her? Too tough? Too flirty? Too generic??

There are some numbers here that I want you to take note of:

1 - Less is often more. Don't worry about wildly glaring highlights on the forehead. Makeup artists often powder models before shots to make sure there is not as much unsightly glare. The forehead shouldn't be completely smooth or highlight free, but some nice smooth gradations with good color variation will really help.

2 - Watch out for spaghetti-hair (as James Gurney calls it.) Try to begin graphically, like JC Leyendecker. Consider the silhouette and consider a "chunk" of hair at first. Work in broad strokes first, moving to more specific shapes. Remember not to get lost in the details and revert back to spaghetti hair. Keep as much of the graphic feel as you can get away with without losing believability.

3 - On flesh like this, try to get a good gradation between the edge of the core shadow on the light side which is warmer, transitioning to the slightly cooler and darker shadow and reflected light side. Again, in this area, less is more. Overly evident brush strokes can look either unfinished, or they can age her.

4 - careful with the shadow side around the lips. You don't want a phantom mustache.

5 - The angle of the cheeks and how they insert into one another is very important. It will determine if you have a strong main character, a supporting actress (the "friend") or the sweet homely extra within millimeters. You don't have to do what I did, but really look at reference of different women's faces and see what characteristics those angles have and why. All these things will give you the control, and you will be able to get subtle nuance that really adds life and appeal to a face.

1) Exterior: Just wanted to upload these guys for some thoughts. Made some revisions to exterior of castle also tried a dappled light. Let me know what you think (still need to nail down the foreground elements). Here's a before & after.

2) Interior: Two major things, this is were I'm headed with the lighting. Any suggestions for this one as would be appreciated. I am also wondering for storytelling suggestions here (either composition actually). This Giant Birdcage in Tower seems like an unusual concept, so it has to be really clear in my opinion.

Anyhow, you've established a 3 pt perspective, so your verticals should receed to same point above us. Likewise have horizontals conform to the v.p. established by the castle. Your 3pt. perspective is a good idea, as it gives it more drama

As far as composition: careful your foreground tree size, placement & shape are more contrasty than the castle. At first glance because they are so even in size and placement it looks like its a rumble between the castle monster vs. tree monster. I would maybe extend the picture plane a little more and that will give you room to change the tree sihouette..

Hey lady, so here is a super super quick and dirty draw over of your girl's face.

I noticed the features were sort of turned, but the head was not, so I free transformed them and turned them back to be aligned with the direction of the face. Also the features weren't quite in the right places from top to bottom. The blue lines on your drawing are where I projected that they should be, and the face I manipulated on the far right shows where I moved them too, mostly the eyes needed to be moved down and the mouth up a smidgen. There were a couple other things that I noodled too, like how the edges of the mouth align with the pupil of the eye and the outside of the nostril aligns with the inside of the eye. Also just check to make sure that the features are correct proportional to the face. Like John told us in 112A we tend to draw the features about 25% bigger than they're supposed to be. I don't know if that makes any sense or anything, but I hope it helps.

Interior: Ideations Revisions (variations)

Hi Folks. Nelson here. Finally able to get these revisions done, so I've come up with 4 possibilities for my interior (variations on an idea). Hopefully they read, I've been having some trouble getting used to the contrast on my monitor. Anyhow, here is where I'm at. My critique last week on this was that it just looked like an ordinary attic of some crazy person with a collection of bird cages. I definetely want it to be more than that. I want it to feel like its the inside of a tower structure, and at the same time when you come upon it it evokes surprise, maybe a little menace, but at the same time somewhat fantastic. I would appreciate any feedback as to which is more appealing or interesting so that I can develop it. So, yeah, if one or two of these are working let me know... or not.

Here is the revision of one of my moment pieces. I had a lot of trouble finalizing this one, and it took me forever to get here. This is going to be an under drawing for my final drawing, so lines are rough and I still need to design some parts...such as the bottom of her dress and the cage in front. I'm going to leave the bird cages on the stairs flat and graphical, but if it's going to be a problem, I'll try to design them better.

I've been trying to work the pose out. I think her legs would be covered by the dress, so it won't really show. I hope it's working a little better. The feathers are really loosely painted in. Hi everyone, here's the most current version. The vines are out, but I still ended up adding more panels... I needed a reaction shot from Joringel after he's on the ground, plus some A/B stuff after putting the force-pull back in. As usual let me know whatever you think.

i've been having a lot of trouble with this one. hopefully this time it gives off a more creepy vibe? i slapped on a quick color pass - something i may use in the finished version.
the ground feels empty right now, but i will be adding texture and stones on the ground to indicate a pathway.

what do you guys think?

I did thumbs for interior and got some crits. A couple of people said the 4 bottom thumbs that have value look pretty good. So I revised those gave more detail into them. The exterior, I didnt get to finish the lighting in value.

I usually try and let you guys work this stuff out before I crit it in class, but in this case, I see that Liz is really struggling, and she's trying to solve the problem, so I am posting this. Consider these edits. The hands of Jorinda are oddly two-dimensional, and they are pointing off to the side. All her attention should be focused towards Joringel to really sell their relationship and the drama of the moment. I think you can work in a more elegant solution with the transformation and how that looks visually. I would recommend trying to maintain a clear read. Try to push the drama by giving Jorinda a dramatic pose, not only in intent, but in shape. the hunched over look really doesn't sell it for me. You're on the right track, and this is really a tricky one, so don't feel discouraged!

ok, still working on it. I took off the beak and gave her a pointy nose instead. I tried to give her something magical to aid in the appearance of a transformation. Instead of feathers I went with birds. Let me know what you think.

I don't know if it makes much difference, but I turned the fans on the windmill a little so that the one pointing down wasn't lined up perfectly with the windmill wall. That was the only thing that was bothering me.

This is my revised comp. I'm not sure if the spikes in the owl gate eyes are too much. I don't know whether to make the bird a nightingale or a crow either. Nightingale fits the story, but crows are scarier. Thanks.

This environment still need to work on so I went back to the black and white comp and try to get the value and lighting more correct. I attempted to fix a tons of perspective issues, I also redesigned and rescaled a few things. Anything else that stood out odd for you? Hopefully I can go to the color comp soon. Thanks in advance!

Hey guys, I redrew my first moment in which jorinda turns into the bird. Right now she has a beak, because it seems to be the most obvious way to indicate she is turning into a bird without giving her angel wings. I was hoping to get some general crits before I make a commitment to color. Any suggestions on the bird-face would be great also. Thanks!
